We dropped the lower unit to change out the water impeller, in order to drop the lower unit we had to unthread the nut on the gear shifter and counted the threads so we could put it back right. After the reassembly it is stuck in forward. We are not mechanically minded but everyone told us it was relatively simple. Also, does the gear shifter shift from side to side or does it shift by going up and down? It never really says in the manual although I assume the manual would assume I would already know this. Thanks

What do you think I may have done wrong? Could I have stabbed the shifter wrong in the lower unit. I have tried to put it back in and it seems to go in the right spot. The manual doesn't seem to be much help and this point.Comment

If the shaft came out and you hat to try and put it back in , then you will have to take lower unit apart to properly reinstall.
And I would recommend someone trained and that knows what he is doing do itComment
