lwr unit
you should NOT be touching anything from the sounds of it !! I see SOOO many pwr heads brunt,, because blow joe mechanic thought he could do the impeller......in the last week I have had to redo 2 w/p impeller on two yamaha's that were serviced at two local shops and both had the wear plate to cup "O" ring damaged and on one,, half the o/ring was missing...its easy to make a mistake...so..do try and save yourself a few bucks and mess it up ???

There is a lot to respect about what Keith said about damage and additional expense when do it yourselfer numpty's get it wrong.
That being said, this also isn't rocket science. A good mechanically minded soul, who knows how to use tools, has a descent set of tools, can read and understand instructions, and is aware of how things were taken apart and can put the back the same way. Someone who has the appropriate manual, instructions, and IPC (illustrated parts catalog) these are invaluable when reassembling to see a hardware stack or part orientation in an exploded view.
And then, having a resource such as a mechanic friend or a web forum, where if you are unsure, you can ask a question and get a straight honest answer.... invaluable.
That being said, you are responsible for the outcome. Use a torque wrench. Use a torque wrench correctly. If its got teats or tires, you bound to have trouble with it....
