Failure of new Fuel Connector

My second EPA fuel connector has fail in less than a year. Both times the fuel line portion failed to close and dumps fuel everywhere. These new mandated connectors are certainly not doing the job and at $20 each this is getting expensive. I now need to carry a spare. Have others seen this problem? Is there a solution beside replacement?
