Water pump went to pieces

I have a Four stroke 225 HP 2004 engine. Water pump failed and when I replaced it, found that the impeller fell apar. Put a new pump in, but motor still overheats. Afraid some pieces got sucked into the engine cooling passages. Anyone have any good ideas how to flush them out?

I ran the engine just putting water in thru the flushing adapter on the cowling. Could that have damaged the water pump?

when was the water pump replace before the failure?
Always best to follow Yamaha's recommendations on service.

What have you kept up with that that they recommend?

Yamaha owners manual does not recommend running with the hook up
