Motor has a light tapping noise between 800-1300 rpms. Noise goes away after about 1300 rpm. Any idea what noise could be. This is the starboard motor port motor makes no noise. Neither has ever given me a problem and both run excellent otherwise. Both have new fuel pumps, head gaskets/anodes, poppet valves, plugs, and carbs rebuilt everything back to factory specs as per Yamaha shop manual.

Noise has been there a while. Water pumps have been completely changed including the housings. New seals on the main shaft and shift shaft. New thermostats the were checked in water to make sure they open at the correct temp. The noise sounds like its coming from the power head.

if the retainer and collar is not correctly installed on the impeller, you get the exact noise you describe.

I was looking in the shop manual it looks as though there are there are a washer a spacer another washer a clip and something else that fits under the pump housing. Is that what you are talking about. Been a few months since I did the pumps so my memory fails me. Just want to make sure that's what you are talking about.

two flat washers and a wavy washer.
when seating the collar and retainer you must pull up on the shaft while tapping the retainer in place.
otherwise at low speeds in gear the shaft bounces up and down and makes a knocking sound.

Thanks. I'm gonna pull the lower unit and check. The shop manual doesn't explain that. Thanks for sharing your years of experience with me. I hope that's what the noise is. I almost remember there only being 2 thin spacers. So this sounds like a fix. For 1994 motors with 1000hrs they are in exceptional shape and the carbed 150's taken care of will last 1000's of hours.
