Do I have to drain the hydraulic fluid before I remove the motor assembly?

No, but a small amount will leak out.
What happened motor rust out? -
Yes, it rusted. Guess I'll have to do a better job at washing it down.

I removed mine and cleaned up the rust and treated the rust and repainted. wash every time with fresh water but it has come back after a couple of years. I guess some type of corrosion inhibitor is needed every so often.
I have read good things about Corrosion X, but have not tried it yet. Just put all new undercarriage on my trailer and the trailer place recommenced that for springs and other trailer partsComment
