Jazzman - Yes, a BUNCH of info here. Rodbolt is the technical expert and is right 99.992% of the time....

Sorry Rodbolt, there was one time back in 2007, I think you had a torque value wrong or something like that....hahaha

      actually, twice.
      no one caught the other

not an expert but I do try to be factually correct.

I agree lots of good info - thanks rodbolt - I as well sure appreciate your detailed responses

Too bad "so far no one makes an ECM con*****ed type regulator. its a cost thing." From my previous life as an electronic engineer I have a hard time believing it's a cost thing? My belief (no facts to back it up) is that it requires a change in thinking at the factory which indeed is a cost thing, however the actual change once implemented will add very little to no additional cost.

Could this be a third time being wr...?

I will be receiving a new rectifier / regulator next week and will swap it out and update the thread later in the week as soon as I can get the boat out in the high water snow melt

PS - Have fun with your gun smithing - I too dabble in that sort of thing - my latest toy is a Torus Judge

As far as I know only the Evinrude E-TEC charging system is ECU con*****ed as it uses 1/4 of the 55 volt system sine wave, to deliver close to 14V to the batteries. The computer also switches the 3 phase stator windings between a series or a parallel circuit depending on the rpm and the amount of voltage or current needed for starting, charging and the operation of the engine electrical components.

Yamaha does not recommend sealed or maintenance free batteries. The 90hp is not a sophisticated or high cost motor and its usage is usually an small to mid-size boats so it will not have all the technology and computer controls as the bigger EFI motors.

There have been several internal design changes in the regulator-rectifier of this type of engine family, F80 through F115hp, and several service bulletins to that affect.

              Hi seahourse5

              Thanks for the comment
I figured others had implemented such a charging system in a marine outboard engine before and hope to see Yamaha get on board with it in the near future. Does Yamaha offer such a charging system in their higher end motors?

Tech Bulletins - I would very much like to see them to better understand what the iussues have been in the past - Any way you can send me them?
