wot at start up

Hello all I'm Phil new to the forum but have been reading threw the post for several months and find realy helpful info. I have a problem ya'll might be able to help me with, I'm looking at problem with a 07 F40BTLR 4 stroke Yamaha for a friend. I'm the third person to look at this motor and i'm not sure what was done to it before me. the original complaint was that it had sat up for 3 maybe 4 months with no problems before that time but now at start up out of gear it will rev up to wot throttle so you have to put it in gear very quick then it will run fine all the power range without any problems but when you bring it back to idle and take it out of gear it will once again rev up to wot any sugestions would be much appreciated thanks.

Check throttle cable, linkage on engine and throttle linkage on carbs to see if binding and not returning back to idle position.
