  • F90 Overhead cam bore caps jam camshaft rotaion

    Hello,
I have picked up a 4stroke F115 that has a carb head installed. I am working on the head and find that the camshaft can bind when installing the camshaft bore caps. These caps can actually move when bolts are loose. I am used to either precision bolts or dowels used to locate the caps correctly. Is it normal for these caps to have such loose tolerances.
    Thanks
    Steve

    its how they are.
however they are numbered and MUST be installed in the correct spot or they wont fit the cam.
exhaust cam caps should have a pink stripe.
when installed the cap numbers are upside down.
if they are right side up then the cap is on incorrectly.
its all in the service manual you have.

Yep caps are installed with numbers upside down and in proper location. Camshaft is straight.
Installed cam with no valves in to check bearing bore clearance. Just seems strange that I have to turn cam and slowly finger tighten caps to prevent binding. Maybe with the valves and springs installed that would help align the caps.
Bought this motor from a guy who got ripped off. Builder never meant for it to last over an hour. Severe corrosion in the water jacket with hole to the exhaust. 8 bent exhaust valves. He installed a carb head and used a plate adapter to install the Fuel Injection intake to the head.
Just trying to prove a point that you can fix something and not through it away. Seems no Machinist around here will even touch a outboard motor.100 hrs into the project so far.
