Sure sounds like you have one of those drive shaft bushings I was talking about in a previous post. Seems logical that when you sprayed lubricant on the drive shaft it ran down to the suspect bushing.
Drop that lower unit and take a look - if it has been at least three years since last water pump repair, you need to do it anyway. Take a look at the drive shaft to see if there is any wear pattern on it from the water pump housing to the shaft splines. If you find a drive shaft bushing, you are probably gonna need to replace it.
