1990 115 yamaha water pump

Maybe someone can help me . Lower unit is dropped . Muffs connected to lower unit and hose on. When turning the drive shaft by hand to work pump water escapes between the drive shaft and the top of water pump housing . Is this normal ? Or should this be sealed ? Cheers

thats normal, just remember when the engine is trimmed down in the water that part is submerged anyway, there is not enough getting by to be an issue,

some leakage is normal.
however any amount of melt on the housing indicates the housing is junk.
