  • 2001 150 Horse V6 hard to start when cold.

My 2001 150 horse motor does not start or hard to start. Will probably start after many tries or I had to use starting fluid after it has sat for 3 or more weeks. Usually after just one week I can start it with two tries. However even if it starts, it would warm up a little bit/ idle then it just shuts of like it was not getting enough gas. I already cleaned and put in new carb kit. New owner to used motor or boat period.

is the choke working properly, just because you hear the solenoid clicking, make sure the rod didnt come off, make sure the choke blades are in fact closing...

Stupid question, so if its not working properly can you just buy a kit and replace it. Forgot to add this to the original post. Once the engine has run it's no problem to start it after sitting in the water for the whole day.

so are you saying i asked a stupid question, or you are asking a stupid question, there are no stupid questions, they are asked because you do not know the answer, there fore a good question. there is no kit, just look at it, watch it work. see what it is doing. once you do this then you will know what to do. have some one operate the choke while you watch it..

                me?
Nah, I was born with the knowledge.
actually I just done this for about 40 years.
make sure the 3 choke plates are fully closing.
quick test is to try a cold start with the manual choke on.
sometimes the battery OR battery cabling is weak enough that the choke wont stay fully engaged while cranking.
correct starting procedure should be about like this.
                tilt engine down.
pump primer bulb to fill carb bowls.
advance throttle lever slightly(target is for it to start at about 15-1800 RPM)
                turn key on.
                depress choke switch.
while holding choke switch on crank engine.

did the auto thing until about 1984,also picked up automachining.

thats when I started doing outboards full time.
been certified for Tohatsu,suzuki,honda,force,merc/mariner,volvo,mercruiser, and made yamaha master tech in march of 06.
