I have an 06 225 VMAX HPDI with approximately 300 hours on it. It has been running rough and stalls occasionally at low RPM. It also intermittently looses or will not reach max RPM at WOT. Shop says these motors are bad news and hard on plugs and prone to this kind of problem. Looks like flap from reed valve got sucked into the cylinder and there may be some damage to the piston and cylinder which translates to a mini rebuild on that cylinder. My question is shouldn't something like that be considered a manufacturing or design flaw? With such a low number of hours on the engine how can something like that break off and get sucked in and cause damage that will be a couple of grand to fix? This engine has been well maintained. Nothing but Yami oil, Ring Free with every fill. Filters changed regularly... They are telling me same thing could happen again on another cylinder 2 months from now.

The highest I've ever seen RPM is 5300. On Saturday when I last ran it I hit 5300 I stopped fished for a while and after that never got it above 4600 RPM that day. The hole shot seemed kind of weak and it stalled coming into dock. Initially shop said it was probably bad gas but I have never seen any water in the Racor.

I have been dealing with HPDI since the introduction in 99, never seen a reed failure.
never seen a reed failure on a 2.6 or 3.1L v6 either.
the VZ200 has a bit different ign characteristics than the Z 200.
never seen plug fouling issues with the VZ.
typically it was the tuna fisherman that needed to ***** for hours between 1100 and 1600 RPM for several hours,with the Z200,.
