  • Power Trim and Tilt Problem

I have a 2002 Yamaha 50hp Four Stroke and when I went to lift the engine the other day the PTT mechanism sounded ratchety although it still worked. However later the same day it stopped working altogether, all this happened within one day, no forewarning.

How do I diagnose the problem, could it be the bushes or does it require a new motor. Is this is an easy fix either way or is it grief....

    Cheers Gregor..

Disconnect trim motor wires from trim relay and connect them to a 12 volt battery to see if trim motor will run.

I had same issue, turned out to be a partially burned out motor. I found one on ebay new aftermarket unit from DB Electrical for $80 delivered. It has worked fine so far.

Also - if this is the problem and you need to replace - it is a beast to do if you try to leave the motor on the boat. I ended up cutting a slot out of the rear bolt hole - starting the rear bolt, very carefully sliding the motor in place, then tightening down with a rachet and swivel.
