How do people change the oil on these engines without making a mess? I removed the bolt from the lower housing and I was able to catch some of the oil in a bottle, but the rest splattered down the lower housing and all over the prop. What does the rubber piece around the drain plug do? The one on my motor, only in service for 2 months, is already cracking. Do I need to replace it?

Find you a piece of thinwall lightweight hose that will slip into hose around drain plug. Tilt engine up all the way removed oil drain plug , insert thinwall hose and lower motor and drain oil into a pan. It still will spill some oil but can easly cleaned up. The hose around drain plug is made of rubber and Yamaha painted it when painting motor and the paint will crack( paint doesn't flex as good as rubber)and peal off, nothing to worry about.
