  • 2004 F90 Will not turn over

    I went to the lake today and trimmed engine down after backing trailer into water. I then went to start the engine. I turned the ignition switch to crank and got a click as if I had low battery. I returned home and measured voltage and had solid 12 volts. I tired turn on ignition again and only slight click and i noticed all guages were zero except for fuel gauge which jumped to full tank then i believe decreased. I seems like I might have short, I tried trimming the motor and hear a click but does not trim and guages again did the same and fuel guage jumped just like when i turn the ignition to start. I have yamaha main manual and need help troubleshooting. I'm going to troubleshoot ignition switch in the morning using the manual for guidance.
    The motor is on a 2004 Century 1701.

    Bad battery or connection

    Check battery voltage under load(when hitting starter)

      A reading of 12.0 Volts on a battery is 60% discharged.....A reading of 11.9 Volts is 70% discharged. It takes a fair amount of "juice" to kick over a 4 cylinder 90 HP 4-stroke. A fully charged battery will give you a reading of 12.9 - 13.0 Volts.

      Before you jump into the engine trying to troubleshoot issues, try charging the battery overnight or swapping it with a new one.

        I will charge the battery up . I did try jumping from other vehicle and had same indications. Would a low battery show fuel guage spike and all other readings zero like battery voltage indicator doesn't show voltage ?

          If jumping from a different good battery did not help then look at all cables and connections.
          Cables can go bad internally, so voltage drop test under load will help you ID where the problems is

            I checked main power and trim cables going from front to back and showed same voltage as battery so it seems like none are shorting out etc and the subsystems like the radio and bilge pump and deck wash pump all work as well so I'm going to charge the battery completely up before trying again. It seems like the large systems start and trim are the ones not functioning so it could very well be the battery.

              Taking voltage readings while not under load will not show a problem cable or connection due to corrosion

                WELL AIN'T THAT A FINE HOW YA DO!!

                My starting battery took a dump on me this morning!!! Switched my *****ing motor battery to start my boat and just did my fishing trip the old school way....used the wind to push me around!
                Came back with 24 Speckled Trout! Not bad for burning about 3 gallons of gas. Now to get a new battery!

                  What is best way to put load on system to check for problem cable or connection for corrossion?

                    Hook up meter, then turn key to start or hit tilt switch if those are the things that are not working properly.

                    Start at battery posts and then work your way down cables.

                      fastest way?
                      pull the stop lanyard.
                      one lead on the brown wire from the solinoid the other on a block ground.
                      turn the key to start,should see about 12v.
                      if so
                      next
                      one meter lead on the negative battery terminal the other on a good engine block ground.
                      turn the key to start.
                      reading should be less than .5V anymore and you have a negative cable issue.
                      next place one meter lead on the positive cable the other at the starter positive cable.
                      turn the key to start,should see between .4 and no more than .7V.
                      anymore and you have an issue.

                        Pull off the cowling and watch the starter. It may be stuck against the fly wheel and hasn't retracted to it's starting position from the last time it started. Fairly common problem.

                          At rodbolt17 is it the brown and white wire that connects to two terminal block where the other one is red? Also what is a negative cable issue if I get to step 2?

                            it may be wise for you to use the dealer locator function on the yamaha marine website and pay a master tech.

                              Would you believe me if I said bad connection or bad cable itself?

                              All of these tests need to be done with a known good battery in place or at least make sure you test the battery voltage drop under load 1st to make sure it is good
