I am having trouble with trim and tilt working all the time. Relay makes click noise but trim does not always work. Replaced old relay with a used one that was bench tested and worked. Installed it and had different results but same problem. When by-passing relay and jumping blue and green trim motor wires to hot and neg. the motor works every time. when bench testing relay it works every time. when testing relay on engine the relay will click but not deliver the voltage to trim motor post. works almost everytime for up and hardly ever for down. I have the small cube shape relay and not the two little round starter relays. PLEASE help. THANKS!

About Buck sixty a pop. Trying to rule out problem other than bad relay prior to dropping that cash. Dont have use for a bunch of extra relays laying around just to find problem was something else. I have spoken with others and begining to think that it is relay. So it might be getting closer to time to brake out the wallet and "Buy a new one, not used" Thanks. Any others want to reply? Wont buy relay for about a week.

use your trusty digital multi meter.
one lead on the green motor wire post the other on the blue motor wire post.
hit the trim up then down.
one should show a positive 12 volts the other a negative 12 volts.
anything else and either the ground is bad, power supply is bad or the relay contactors are bed.

I have not. I'm new to outboards. My granddaddy give me the boat about a week ago. I took her out for the first time and thats when the trim system quit. I had to idle back in. I have a 55 Yamaha. I think its a 94. But no telling how old the trim system is. He put it on the motor in 99 or 2000. And it come off another motor. Don't kick me to hard since I'm new to these kinds of motors, but how would I go about checking the oil in it.

Please check this link, it shows a T&T for that approx year but the fill hole screw usually looks about the same, in the same general area:

Part #18 is the filler plug. The engine should be up fully, resting on the mechanical linkage, all rams extended. Fluid should be up to the edges of that that filler hole..Last edited by TownsendsFJR1300; 06-02-2014, 07:48 PM.Scott
