12v output to light????????

I have a 15hp 2 stroke Yamaha (2002) and I have been told that with a rectifier, I can get 12volts to power lights via a rectifier. I have seen several boaters doing that and I asked what and where it is connected and they all said the unit was installed by the dealer.
Does anyone know what part I would need and where it is to be connected.
