I upgraded from a 15hp Yam, to a 25hp electric start. So I needed a battery, for starting. Didn't have to be a deep cycle. I parked my garden tractor next to the boat, and with jumper cables, the motor started right up. I went to Walmart and for about $30, bought a garden tractor battery.
After using it 3 times, I had the carb needle valve stick closed, and the motor wouldn't start. I can't believe how much I cranked the motor, trying to start it, at the dock, and more at home while trying to diagnose the problem, and they battery never even showed signs of getting weak.
So if you have a small boat and electric start, and don't want to add much weight, or spend $75 +/- you might think about a garden tractor battery.
I did it because of the weight, but didn't mind saving a few bucks either!
