  • 2001 Yamaha 90 HP - Tilt sometimes working - Help

    Howdy,
Just picked the boat up and was told that the tilt was not always engaging. Filled full of fluid, hit UP and Down and sometimes works sometimes doesn't. The pump starts and stops - it doesn't just free spin.

Called Local Yamaha Repair (Clear Lake (Houston), Texas). They listened and said it was likely either the relays needed to be "burned in" (run up and down several times)to free up corrosion or possibly a relay problem. They indicated I should switch the up and down relay and see if that isolates a problem.

I tried running up and down, but it would stop often, sometimes it would run all the way, sometimes move 1" and stop. Let off the button, push again - sometimes if does nothing, sometimes it runs the entire range, sometimes partial run then stops.

Questions - 1) Is this a common issue, 2) where are the relays? 3) any other comments / questions - other related issues?

    Thanks,
    Steve - Pearland (Houston).

Check for 12 volts going to trim motor on trim motor wires from relay to see if loose voltage when stops working. If voltage stays constant then trim motor may be bad.
Follow wires from trim motor up to relay to locate relay.
