2hp outboard won't spark

I took the flywheel off to try and get some rust off the magneto and i found that the points weren't open at all. I'm new at this and i can't figure out how to reset them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would help if you posted the model # of your motor.
Must be an old one to have points and I guess it is a Yamaha

model number is 2mshq, and i think the year is 1992

Yep, 92 is what it is.
Looks like points were used until 94, but are obsolete now, so hope yours are not broken

Never worked on one of those little 2 hp motors, but would think you would adjust like any of the old points operated gas motors. Loosen a screw and get cam to high spot and use a feeler gauge to set gap.

May need to find a service manual on it

If you can't find a manual/specs, then set them for about .015" wide open and you should be close enough for it to run...then keep looking for a manual for your motor.

so i set the points and tried to start it up but i still didn't get a spark. is there anything else i could try?

Is your spark plug good and clean? Is your switch turned to "on"?...

".015 wide open" means when the cam opens the points that's the setting with a feeler guage. Are the points clean and shiny?

i don't think there is a switch and i been i've been sanding the points and magnetos so they are pretty clean but they weren't that corroded in the first place. i'm thinking it might be a problem with the kill button because it doesn't click or give at all when i push it. does that seem plausible? i'm just hoping the coil isn't completely broken.

oh and i changed the spark plug

Maybe you could take a section of wire and bypass that kill button just to see if it's the problem. Kill button should have a "spring" feel to it. Are there any ground wires near the coil that need cleaning?
