  • Chattering sound 89 200

Chattering sound at 3800-3900 cruise move rpms up to 4200 and it goes away. The only thing changed from last year was lower unit replacement (another used one) and driveshaft bushing. I greased the shaft (OMC Triple Guard) when I installed the bushing but maybe lube is gone now. There was no bushing in there for 5 years. Is it really needed???

Check for loose parts like trim tab, motor mount covers, apron and cowling.

Maybe operate boat/motor with the upper cowling off at "chattering" RPM and look to see what might be making the sound. The black plastic shifter/throttle slides on my 90C used to rattle at certain RPM's and a couple of well-placed tie-wraps shut 'em up for good! Don't suppose your noise could be coming from your prop?...I've heard some props could "rattle" some at certain RPM's. Good Luck!

One other thought/possibility, on top of the water pump are some "spring washers" inside a stainless steel cup that take the drive shaft up and down movement out. These have to be installed correctly to prevent that driveshaft "chatter" at certain RPM's....could be that since you replaced your lower unit!....

          Rattle

I would check your aprons cowling and any parts as Boats.net suggested. I had a similar thing on my motor couple of years ago. It turned out to be loose bolts on the shroud between the cowling and the outdrive.

That's interesting......I did have to replace a missing front apron bolt when I did the water pump. Maybe it loosened up or came out and the apron is rattling. Will check it out......

              That was exactly it!
Front apron bolt had backed out. Was making quite a racket. Man....I was starting to think the motor was on it's last legs.

              Thanks guys!
