  • is it possible to get a 'SEALING' cap for the steering bar at the outboard?

not sure what I'm talking about, please look at the picture.

salt water has gotten in there and mix with the grease and end up seize the steering, (not completely but very very hard).

now to fix it had to take the whole engine out and pull outboard away from bracket and clean out all the junks. and then my mechanic fitted it with a 'cap' as show in picture.

he called it a 'Wiper' that will just wipe the grease on the shaft everytime u steer, but will NOT keep the water out. i check the wiper and it is not very tight. it is keeping the grease in but not 100%. just wondering is there any chance i can buy a similar kind of 'CAP' can actually keeps the water out and keeps the grease in.?

My 1999 Yamaha 90C has that same hex shaped black plastic nut and there's an O-ring under it that tightens down the more you screw it in. If you're missing that O-ring I'm sure it would be easy enough to slip one on there. Mine keeps the water out real well! Good Luck!

There's a product called a Steering Buddy that replaces the nut on the end of the steering tube. It has a zerk fitting so you can grease it when you grease the rest of the zerks on the tilt/steering mechanism. I put them on all my cable steered boats and swear by them. No stuck steering.

This is a metal made nut with a seal and a grease nipple . Got one on my 90hp and it works well .
In Europe this nut cannot even be ordered .. had to get it from the US .
        Cheers - Jürgen
