  • Replace Mercury optimax 115 with yamaha 90?

    Hi,

I have a SeaRay 185 with a outboard Mercury optimax 115 (dry weight of the searay is 839 kg (1,850 lbs) )

I am having awful reliability issues with the optimax and I want to change to Yami.

We have to other 75hp outboard powered boats in the family - so I am thinking of repowering the searay with a 90hp Yami .. that way all the replacement parts will be the same between the motors.

My question is - will a 90hp yami 4 stroke be powerful enough to replace the optmax 115 .. I am not a speed freak but I just dont want the boat to be sluggish.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.

I think you will notice a big difference in power between the 2 motors as Mercury is usually known for speed and putting out a little more than advertised H.P. That does not mean that the Yamaha 90 would be insufficient though. I have an older Yamaha C-80 on a 900 lb Sea Pro 170CC and think that it could stand a little more power with 4 people riding.
