  • Will start, but wont stay running without choke

    Hello all,
I have an 89 two stroke 115 v4, etlf model. Itll start but then wont run without choke. Then after choking it out to keep it going ,as soon as i let go of the choke she starts to die. After a while of this , fuel starts to drip out while turning over. Finally had to bring her back in at idle, clicking the choke swith every second or two to get me back to the dock. Checked spark with a tester and the spark was orange, not blue, so i think that might be part of it. This was the maiden voyage of a "new to me" boat , and i did rebuild the carbs and set float levels after it had sat for three years without running. Maybe my screw settings?? I didnt think to clean out the pick up tube in the gas tank.doh! Maybe gummed up? It had fuel in it for the three years but i just drained it and refilled with new thinking that would be good enough. How would a person check to see if spark is right and strong enough? Any other suggestions would be great too. Don't want to put the kids in it til she's right. Want to be as safe as possible. Many thanks in advance

Clean the carbs better and flush the lines and pump well to make sure you do not get stuff from them hit the cleaned carbs.

Adjust everything like the service manual states

Ok so to start i felt maybe fuel supply was issue. Got a seperate tank full of fuel and started it which it did. The bulb is always a bit soft and the bowl often has an airspace in between starts, but i just squeeze the bulb to take up the space. Is that normal? Also after doin that and no change with the idle conditio (wouldnt idle withoit choke) i decided to adjust idle screws. So i set them to the seloc books recommendations and NOW no start at atll. After 1/2 an hour of trying, i decided to go back to the settings when it waa running. *** now not starting there either. 1/2hour trying to start at original setti gs and nothing. ANY ideas, please? Are the seloc book settings for a 115 hp two ztroke printed right? Trying to get in the water before summer is finished and my kids hate me. Thx kindly

Primer Bulb should get hard when motor is pumped before motor is turned over or started and not let any more fuel to be pumped into system if fuel pump and carbs are functioning properly and sealing off. Once the fuel pump starts working then it sucks on the line and bulb, so it will not be firm anymore

Maybe some one could answer you question if you would tell us what you set the screws at.

Did you do the link and sync as stated in manual?

Do you have spark now with the no start?

          Aha, thank you,
So i did get as you describe. Primer bulb would fill then get hard and then stop as the floats would fill up i assume. So then i checked the seloc and set the screws at 1/2 a turn and no go. The book says 3/8 to 7/8. So i figured half would be good. Then i tried a full turn then back to where they were prior to rebuild and where it was while running rough. Almost two turns( previous owner had them there). BUT now nothing at the prior settings where it would run. Thats why im at a loss. In the mean time i checked fuel filter and found no o rings!!!! The book shows two. Is that right? Have you guys git two o rings in yours. Too late tonight to get parts, so i was thinkin of buying an oring kit? Would those work? There js spark. (orange i. The tester) and i did check the oil pump linkage. What do you mean by the linc and sync and where in the seloc would i find that procedure?
          Thx much

do not know as I have never looked at an aftermarket manual.

I would stick to Yamaha stuff, but it is your choice
