1990 200 grinding going into gear

My motor has started grinding going into reverse, when i remove shift cable and shift it by hand , both reverse and forward work fine. Problem is, when i adjust shift cable all the way out, it then shifts into reverse, but grinds going into forward, and does not fully engage, the pivoting lever under the carbs does not seem worn. Any ideas? Any chance the 704 controls can be adjusted for a longer throw?

Probably need to replace shift and throttle cables.
