  • How to find neautral

Changed the water pump on my 1993 85h.p. yamaha outboard. When I put the lower unit back in it starts and only runs in forward gear, no matter where I move the shifter. I can not figure out how to find neautral in the lower unit.

With lower off, turn shift shaft on gearcase until goes into neutral and can spin prop shaft.

Did you remove shift shaft from gearcase when working on water pump? If so then shift cam may not be end of shaft.

Last time boating, I had a little trouble getting in reverse, but it did work. It appears to be stuck in gear now. Is it possible that shift cam or something broke. Is it a hard job to remove shift shaft and check cam?

Found out I had to turn the shift shaft counter clockwise till it stopped and then used pliers and a rag to turn it an eighth of a turn more to find neutral. Finally headed to lake!!
