To remove the lower unit, I loosened the bolts and got the unit free, then I put it into reverse so I could loosen the lock nut on the shift rod. It loosened but the hex rod was still stuck on the upper shift rod. So I oiled it several times and left it overnight. Then I put vice grips above and a wrench on the hexrod. Even with the vice grip, instead of the hex rod coming loose, it broke up top. The rod came off with what appaers to be a peg that has a cotter pin at one end.
I sure wish I had heated it up.
What needs to be removed to repair where the shift rod connects up top?
