  • Pressure Testing Lower Unit

Has anyone pressure tested a lower unit? I have a 80hp 4 stroke and the spec's call for a pressure of 14.2lbs for 10 seconds. I pump up to 14lbs and unit drops down to 12 lbs in 10 seconds. I assume that a drop is to be expected, but how long before the pressure drops. Is this 2lb drop ok? Should it hold 14.2 lbs for 1 hour? I hate to ruin the lower unit. I did replace the water pump and lower seals. No evidence of water in lower unit oil. What do think....

    Thanks Geowhizz55

remove prop, drain lower unit remove lower unit, pump to 14psi. through either plug. Immerse in water filled bucket-- leaks will show up.

Sounds like you may be over-thinking this, and really don't have a problem...especially if there's no water in the lower unit...maybe just go fishing? Good Luck!

That's what I decided to do. Go fishing. Then check for water in oil. Worst that could happen, I wouldn't catch any fish....You're right, I think to much....

        Thanks......
