  • Electrical crank problem

Yamaha 115, 1999, 2-stroke. Ran 20 miles, increased rpm, had engine shut down. Put into neutral and crank back up ran fine. 2nd trip ran and cranked great. 3rd trip preformed fine all day, except at the end of the day shut down went ashore, trimed motor up got back trimed down, and would not crank, no spin of starter, or any clicking noise. Batterys ok, ran troling motor, and tilt and trim. Check for lose connections to on engine all were tight. All other electrical seems to be working. Electrical choke seems to work, can hear the click.
My Yamaha shop manual doesn't seem to shed a light. Where do I start looking?

sounds like you have more than one problem.
Motor should not be shutting down by itself.
You need to find out if it is loosing spark or if it is fuel related.

As far as starter not engaging
There is a neutral start switch that will keep the motor from starting in gear, could be motor in gear or switch is bad.
Or key switch bad or wiring problem

At least that is some things to start checking on

Thank you. On the shut down while running, when it happen I was increasing speed, and as I had just replaced the filter didn't even think of a lack fuel, did look at the Yamaha guage, and did not see a icon light but the buzzer went off. But that could happen the same as when you just turn the engine on, as it will do it then. Good info will check all.

When it shut down, the alarm only went off at shutdown. Turn the key off and restart, at that point no alarm. My first issue is to find the problem with the cranking. As 99yam40 stated dead power issue, has to found first. Like he stated check key switch, kill switch, find out why power is not getting to system. I did try the switch on the side which you can pump oil into the oil resivor, and it did work. The more I think about it, something to do with ignition.

2 years ago had to replace the power wires from the battery to the engine. They were new and OEM replacements. That was difficult to find, due to where the break in the insulation was.
