  • How screwed am I

I removed the drain screw from the bowl on the top carb in my 87 Yamaha 70HP. As i was screwing it in - just as it started to snug it started turning very easily - then the head twisted off.

Can I get it out and replace it? or will I need to buy a bown with the screw in it? Or can I buy just the bowl?

A good mechanic can drill and EZ out the remaining screw as long as it was not cross-threaded in. The carb and bowl will have to be removed to do it and new gaskets installed.

I don't have prices handy, but perhaps a new bowl and screw is cheaper than the hourly charge for the time spent to drill things out and inspect the remaining threads.

Seems to me that if the head just came off with the threaded part still in there, that you could use an Easy-Out to remove that threaded piece and just put a new drain plug in. My 90HP Yamaha also has 3 of these brass drain plugs, and I drain the carbs regularly, trying to be very careful since I've heard that these brass plugs could fail sometimes. Good Luck!

Does anyone know a place in Charlotte NC that carries the carb bowl / screw assy?

If you can get to it, an Easy Out should back that brass threaded piece right out of that float chamber...then just a new drain plug from your Yamaha Dealer. Good Luck!

I have an idea for you...if your brass drain plug is the same or similar to mine, then it has a hole in the middle through the threaded section. Maybe you can take a small screwdriver or drill bit or similar, shape it on a wheel to allow it to engage that little hole, then turn it counter-clockwise to unscrew it. The brass threads should be clean and fairly loose, allowing for easy removal?

Mine has a hole in the center - will try and extract it first before purchasing the float bowl but will still need to find the drain plug.

I believe if you grind/shape the tip of that little screwdriver/tool, it'll engage that center hole just enough to back that plug right out of there! Call around at the Yamaha Dealers to see who has those drain plugs!...you'll be home free! Good Luck!

Great news - the remainder of the plug came out easily with a small screw driver.

Now - Just need to find a drain plug here in Charlotte. A city this size HAS to have a parts outlet for Yamaha outboards. Anybody know where I can find a plug here in Charlotte?

Found a place in Gastonia - New Hope Marine. They took care of me. I feel like I dodged a bullet. Now if I can get this motor going without having to rebuild the carbs that will be great.
