  • F150 lowish idle (6-700 RPM's)

Having read the thread on the stalling F150 previosly was very informative. I did have that problem on mine sometime ago but it was repaired (they changed out throttle bodies???) and was pretty good after that.

I've since switched over to non ethonol fuel, use K100 ( K100 Fuel Treatment ) and Seafoam. I just picked up some Yamaha Ring Free. It should be noted that I regularly drain/blow back (by mouth) the drain that holds the fuel pump, the fuel exiting is spotless now, no debris what so ever. Both new 10 micron fuel filters...

It does not stall what so ever, high speed RPM's are fine (about 5600 WOT, 42 MPH, 20'4" CC, about 35 gallons on board).

The idle should be 700 +-50 RPM's. Its staying between 600 RPM and goes back and forth to 700 (in or out of gear). When its at 600 rpm, I do get a slight hestitation when changing gears (docking) and would like the idle raised back up just slightly. If I throttle it up to 700, no hesitation what so ever... Other than that, NO stalling, runs great.. It does the "multi-click" when turned off"

    Now the question.

I went to the dealer Monday and see what kind of project it is to kick the idle up just a tad (the correct way). I don't want any BS fix. The service manager (we're on a first name basis) did initially mention just tuning up the throttle stop screw. I brought to his attention, to my knowledge, that the throttles should be set close to being closed. I mentioned shouldn't the ISC be handling the idle speed? He agreed and also mentioned the TPS may be off some. He asked about a throttle sync, which I had done and just rechecked (within 4MM across the board). I did check throttle linkages/spec's, it all appeared spot on short of some loose 8mm lock nuts.

I did copy several posts (see below) from Rodbolt and the long thread on the subject which he read closly (see below copy) and mentioned "he's tuning up the TPS"..

He did agree he can plug in a lap top and check the TPS, ISC valve etc. I have an appointment 5-11-12.

What would be the correct way to adjust/repair? Lower the blade stop screws a bit, check/replace (if needed the ISC) and adjust the TPS (to the higher end of spec's?)

Last question, in neutral, obviously the idle should be at 700RPM's, in gear, should the idle INCREASE back to 700 RPM automatically?

Thank you ahead of time. Scott

    Rodbolt?

Copied and presented to Service manager:

    The stalling issue is easy.
adjust ALL 4 throttle shutters closed.
means back off the top one, adjust the lower one so all 4 move the same.
from here we are gonna deviate from the manual a bit.
now you MUST have a means to monitor TPS voltage.
watching it on the lap top is better.
however what we are going to do is fake out the ECU
what we are going to do is actually mis adjust the TPS.
insure all shutters are fully closed, then using the top screw slightly open all 4 shutters, then set the TPS voltage.

***what you want is the ISC to close down to about 40% instead of its typical 60-65%.
the off idle stalling on the F150 is common, drove me nuts 3 years ago on my 07 F150.
if this is an actual Yamaha dealership have the call the RTA. They can supply it.
Doubtful the ISC is bad and you will most likely have a spare 300 dollar part.
at engine shut down you will hear the ISC resetting for the next start cycle, that's the rattling sound you hear immediately after key off.
it can also be tested both dynamically and statically with the laptop.

    7 .76 its all good.
only thing you may notice is a slight increase in idle speed.
    maybe
however like I explained before AND its not in ANY school OR service literature.
a few the F150 motors will exhibit that off idle stall if the shutters are set up like the manual says.
What I found in august of 07 on MY F150 is to set all 4 shutters completely closed, then using the stop screw lightly crack them THEN adjust the TPS voltage to about .72V.
then look at the ISC value on the laptop.
what your looking for when your done is an ISC value in the mid 40% range,a TPS value between .72 and .75 and an idle speed around 650-700 RPM.

Took me half a day to make mine quit stalling when I first got it.
You have to remember, I use mine for demonstrations and I use it in the marina where I work and I wear a Yamaha master technician hat. Looks bad when my motor was stalling.
The RTA used my motor last summer to show the other techs how to do it and then I had to redo it, again.

idle speed on that motor is con*****ed by the ECU based on TPS feedback.
if idle speed is to low the ISC opens and adds air,to high and the ISC closes and subtracts air.
this control is based on TPS feedback with MAP sensor for trim.
its a dirt simple speed density EFI system.

      F150

Thanks for the quick response Rodbolt.

      Just one other question,

When/once its working correctly, when placed in gear, can I assume the idle should rise back to 700?

Right now it tends to lower to 600 with the load of the prop and water on it.

      Thanks again..
