  • new to boating, yamaha 200 o/b died on gulf

Long story short, i bought a nice boat with a 200 Yamaha outboard 2 stroke yesterday. Ive been on test drives and more with the person who sold it to me. I went out today to keywaden island in Naples and it ran beautifully at 4500 RPM's and while in the idle speed during those slow periods. When leaving the island (45 mins later), it backed up fine and we idled out of the island area. When it came time to cruise the boat was making a weird noise (clicking almost) and my wife looked at me as I looked at her and we knew something wasn't right. I slowed the boat down to 30 RPM and to idle and shut if off to check the fuel bulb and what not in the back, everything looked fine. I mixed the proper oil:gas ratio as well. Thinking we were out of gas (10 Gallons i put in for a trip that shouldn't have burnt that much) i tried to start her up again. Put it into neutral and with the choke it wouldn't turn over! I checked the battery and it was on both the batteries and tried/tried/tried and tried over and over. It would just make the start up noise and sound like a choking trying to turn over. Had to get SEATOWED IN and I need to know what to do tomorrow AM since the tide is the lowest it's been in 3 years (2 feet in the bay). Should i have them tow it to a mechanic or put it back on the lift?
Did i break the engine some how? Is it the lower unit? I am so freaked pissed that this happened on our first outing (major? disappointment) especially after everything everyone has ever said about Yamahas. I hope it isn't anything major or I will be out of money.

need a lot more info as making a clicking noise does not say much.

    Model # is a must

    Does the alarm system function?
Did you inspect the lower unit oil before buying?
Isn't this motor oil injected ( have oil tanks)or do you have to mix oil with fuel?
    Check lower unit oil
drop lower unit to see if that will allow motor to turn over

Its a yamaha200 2 stroke and I have to mix it with the gas. I know its a v6. I just don't understand how it ran perfect for an hour we stopped. Started right up and when going 15 mph it started acting up and making a weird but not to heavy ticking noise.

Also when we stopped to check on it I made sure fuel bulb was full and tight and then put it into nuetral and turned it over with the choke pushed in. It just sounded lile a car eoth a dead battery. It turned over a few times and stalled.

So, you have no idea what the motor model # is.
That will tell everyone what this motor is.

Do you realize a 200 HP motor will drink about 20 gallons of fuel an hour at WOT.

Like I said something is locked up, so drop lower unit and see if that will unlock motor. If that does not allow motor to turn then something bad has happened in the power head

Could have overheated or was running lean on one or more cylinders and toasted piston and cylinder wall. hard to tell from here

Its going to a service Marina today. Maybe I ran out of fuel. The guage isnt hooked up. I put 10 gallons mixed in to the tank and only ran WOT for maybe 20 minutes max. Would that be a reason for the engine to not turn over and when found to Starr making sounds to the engine. When I heard it I shut it off and we weren't moving fast at all no wake speed.

                      carbed or EFI?
the never made a C model of a saltwater series engine.
the fact your premixing means someone has had skinners on it that was clueless.
however the model number is on the side of the port transom bracket.

                          still need a model number.
the saltwater series 2 was made in both 3.1 and 2.6L and carbed and EFI.
                          and NONE were pre-mix models.
