90hp 2-stroke Won't Shift

I replaced my water pump impeller and the job seemed to go just fine. I have done this before on MerCruiser Stern Drives and Evinrude outboards. This was my first Yamaha. I put her in the water and she started right up but would not shift to any gear. I pulled the hood and saw that the shifting mechanism was working OK from the cable to the slider mechanism and everything looked good upstairs. Is it possible that I missed something when I pulled the lower unit and put it back on? The lower unit went on just fine so I assumed that the shift shaft engaged OK. (It shifted OK before I pulled the lower unit and replaced the impeller.)

Maybe drop the lower unit and make sure shifter shaft is connected properly.

If you do not look and aline as you put it together it probably will not line up
