  • 2004 115 TXRC Starter Problem

Starter motor spins, but will not pop up and engage fly wheel. The same thing happened almost exactly three years ago. After being towed in, the next day it worked fine and continued to work until my last trip. When I called the dealer the first time, he said he couldn't diagnose the problem when it was working properly. He suggested I might spray WD40 on the spindle. All electrical connections to the starter are as clean as they came from the factory. Any suggestions short of replacing a very expensive starter? Thanks in advance for your help

first test battery voltage at the starter.
then check the voltage drop between the nega
tive battery terminal and the block, should be less than .5v.
then test the voltage drop between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal, should be less than .7v.
the starter drive is an inertia design and if the starter spins to slowly it wont pop the drive up.

Thanks for your help, low voltage to starter. Tightening nut less than 1/4 turn solved the problem. I may learn to like this forum, but I really hope I don't need it too often.
