When testing the oil control unit to see if it is working properly do I need to have the motor running or will having the ignition on work for testing? Pretty much my motor isn't transferring oil from the remote tank to the powerhead tank on it's own. I can use the manual transfer switch to transfer oil to the powerhead tank. Under the troubleshooting flow chart is says to touch the brown and ground wire together, which should transfer oil and continue to transfer oil until you touch the white and ground together. But it doesn't specify if the motor needs to be running when performing the test.

easy way?
drain the engine oil tank.
make sure the remote tank is at least 1/2 full.
turn on the key.
you now should have an alarm,3 bars flashing on the tach and 180 seconds of transfer.
if switch SWB,remote tank level, is bad or the wiring is bad NO automatic transfer will ever occur and the center bar or yellow lamp is illuminated.
that enine you can test the engine oil tank switchs with key on engine off UNLESS it has the updated oil control module that has a green/white wire going to the pulser coils.

When you say switch are you referring to the control unit?

with the key on engine off are all three bars lit?
if swb has failed OR the wireing is bad it will flash/illuminate the center bar and NO automatic oil transfer will occur,ever.
all the oil control module does is switch the ground,on or off, for the transfer pump.
all the emergency switch does is apply the ground manually.
SWB MUST be in the circuit and the switch closed or NO automatic transfer can occur never no how no way aint gonna happen.
wont be the first time I ever saw modules and engine tank switchs replaced over a SWB circuit fault.

beats me but yamaha labels the remote tank swicth as SWB.
the engine tank swtchs are labeled SW1 SW2 and SW3.close SW1 and the oil control unit commands pump stop,close SW2 and the control module applies the ground path for pump on,close SW3 and a second pump on command is generated,rpm reduction is commanded,visual and audible is commanded.
