  • dust seal on trim, f225

Does anyone know if the dust seal on the trim can be replaced without removing the cap? I have a small leak around the shaft. I have recieved conflicting answers, anyone done this?

as a proffessional tech, no I have not tried a patch.
typically on that design unit if the wiper leaks its due to a failing piston oring or the cyl is scuffed.
time for a dissasembly and inspection.

not looking to patch, i have new seals, just didnt know if the cap had to be removed to replace them. Yamaha's scamatics show it as being able to be change without removing the cap. The rod is as smooth as the day it was made, just dry rotting/deteriating seal. was just trying to find out. Thanks, Matt

I am trying to tell you its a simple dust wiper.
on yamaha units where the trim cap does NOT contain an oring and back up ring in the cap the dust seal is just that.
this design unit should never have much hydraulic pressure.if the trim piston oring leaks it now pressurizes the chamber between the piston and the bottom of the cap, now the wiper leaks.
could I simply change the wiper, most likly I could figgure it out.
but it will most likly leak again soon.
