Upon disassembling my water pump, a seal was stuck on the shaft. This seal was above the small metal cover for the rubber impeller. Does this metal seal belong in the main plastic water pump cover?

You didn't say what model engine you have but if it is a late model V4 or V6 it has a spacer,collar and set of washers to take end play out of drive shaft and they do need to be installed -
It is a 1988 150 HP ETXG. Yamaha dealers do not show this year on thier exploded views. I was able to find the items that you stated under an older model parts page. I hope they fit.Comment

They didn't use that in 1988, It must have a newer lower unit on itComment

You are right. I remembe having the lower unit replaced with a 1994.Comment
