  • TNT Relay Bad? Testing with Voltmeter before spending $115+s&h?

    1994, Yamaha 2 stroke 70 HP 70TRLS.

I am original owner working 100% from 1994 until 2011.
Last Fall the Trim Up started to "act up" on several occasions I had to go all the way down and then it would go up. Again this Spring worked most the time and NOW NO TRIM UP. My Lund Pro-V has 2 Trim Switches and 1 on Motor.
All 3 Trim switches acted exactly the same (so I eliminated them as the problem).

When trimmed Down I hear relay click then Trim Motor Run.
When trimmed Up I hear relay click then No Sound from Trim Motor.
I removed the UP & Down Wires that cam out of Trim Motor (Blue & Green) from the Relay, then as I read here connected them to a good 12 vdc Battery and then reversed the Polarity and the Trim Motor WORKS UP & DOWN as normal.

Further reading here (post about Big Spark Little Sparks Ect) well I can say "Sparks are very subjective IMHO.

I do have a Fluke Voltmeter for Testing.

After all above testing my Theory is the Relay finally went Bad, but Would like to use Voltmeter to confirm before $115.00+s&h

    Part Number is 61A-81950-00-00

        Sounds like relay is bad.
It has to make and break connection on the + and - so it can reverse direction of motor. You can use your meter to check to see which is not making the connection.

The T&T is a 2 relay setup so maybe one of the relays is not picking up or just not making good contact internally

I have disassembled start relays before and cleaned the contacts, but never tried to on T&T.

          99,

Hmmm, good thought about opening up the relay? I was thinking it might be a sealed unit from factory. When i post back here I will let you know! I hope you are right that could be big savings$$$

They are sealed units, not serviceable normally, but something to look at. Even the start relays I opened up were sealed also, had to drill out the rivets and then put back together with screws. They were not Yamaha ones.

Test to make sure what the problem is before tearing apart

              99 and All,

This was an OEM 61A-81950-00-00 Relay switch. This a.m. before the post that mentioned to (test before opening) did not see because I was outside opening the Relay.

Bad News It will cost me $115 plus to see if this is the problem for sure, because opening the Relay (not sealed just 6 screws) will cause 4 fine copper wires to break, 2 on each end. The relay and contacts were like NEW INSIDE the contacts needed no cleaning.

The relay is a BASIC Magnetic Switch for UP or DOWN and nothing more!!! The Click is the Magnet making contact closure, just that simple.

              NEVER OPEN THIS!!!

                Good news

Yes this was a relay problem. I am guessing one of those little wires had finally broke, then I broke the other three when opening. Everything is working 100% and still cost me $115 + s&h. Other than some spark plugs this is the first $$$ I had to spend on this motor in 20 years... I LUV my YAMMIE
