  • skeg repair and adding a outboard lower end nose cone

    Yamaha SX200:

Do I need to remove the lower end inner components (propellar shaft/gears/oil) to weld a new skeg and a cosmetic nose cone to the lower end?

I've read it might be okay to weld the skeg without removing anything, but I'm not sure about the nose cone.

    Thanks

If you are welding nose cone then probably would need to disassemble gearcase.

      Thanks....

From what I've seen in the service manual below is the disasembly procedure after removing the lower end from the motor:

      1. Remove shift rod.
      2. Remove prop.
      3. Open claw washer.
      4. Remove ring nut.
      5. Use slide hammer to pull out propellar shaft and bearing case.

      Does this sound right?

Is there anything else that needs to be removed or does everything come out with the propeller shaft?

I wish the service manual was a bit more detailed.

It does require special tools to remove ring nut and pinion nut. If it's been in saltwater then probably will need a heavy duty puller and possible a torch to get carrier out.

Nose cones can be attached using JB Weld. Just sand the paint off mix up the JB Weld and press it into place. Finish it off with Bondo or JB Weld to smooth it out. I have fabricated nose cones out using a drink cup filled with JB Weld as well. Never had one to come off.
