Changed the impeller, reassembled foot - but cannot change gear. Dissassembled again -shaft moves when prop is turned. How do I manipulate the gear linkage(pull.push, twist?) to get it into neutral? Any help greatly appreciated.

Drop the foot again, wrap a rag around the shifter shaft splines to protect them from the Vice-Grip pliers used to rotate shifter shaft while turning prop until neutral is found. Put motor control also in neutral position, re-assemble, and you should be good to go! Good Luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Not sure I understand about the "shifter shaft splines" -can't see these in the manual or recognise them in the lower unit. I have a rigid gear shift link going into a housing in the lower unit which is secured with a philips screw. It looks as if that should be pulled/pushed to change gear but is is very resistant to pulling/pushing. Am I missing something here? Appreciate the help.

Problem solved. Put a vice grips on the link and pushed down a bit harder-felt the gear change and the prop disengaged. Reassembled without difficulty and gear change is working.
NOTE TO SELF FOR FUTURE USE--SELECT NEUTRAL BEFORE DROPPING LOWER UNIT-MAKES LIFE MUCH EASIER !!
