I have a 2006 50 TRL 2 Stroke that has been making a tapping/ticking noise that can be heard while at an idle. When you put it in forward and speed up a little the noise quits. Th mechanic has replaced the crankshaft with a used crankshaft and it did stop not the noise. Then he changed the bearing at the top and bottom of the crank shaft. Still noisy. Does anyone have prior experience with this issue?

Did you inspect pistons, rings and cylinder walls for any damage? Are you sure it's in engine and not in gearcase?

Yes, we did inspect the gear case and replaced the lower bearing on the drive shaft. All the gears were in good shape. No shavings on the drain plug. The cylinder walls and piston have no visible wear or damage. The pistons were replaced last October after two burnt pistons.

Might have the cylinder diameter checked to see if outside tolerance, most of those three cylinder engines only have about .0025 piston to cylinder clearance.

Finally found the noise maker. It was two worn wrist pins which were missed on first inspection. Two pistons and the rings on the other one were replaced today. The power head was rebuilt last October and only had about 40 hours since break in period. Now begins the long break in process all over again! Thanks for the input...

Did you have the cylinders bored out and use oversize pistons to make sure they have the proper clearances with the pistons?
I read where you replaced pistons last year(only 40 hours ago). Did you replace the pistons last time with new or used and did the wrist pins get replaced? Strange how you ended up with this problemLast edited by 99yam40; 12-29-2011, 09:34 AM.
