Power Trim Help

I have a 1999 yamaha B90TLRX. I am not a outboard mechanic but very mechanical & have many tools. I just bought this 1999 Sailfish 174 & saw the trim motor was rusted & needed to be repalced. I pulled the motor & found the filter desetegating. Should I replace filter, assemble new motor. or should I flush the system 1st? the fluid was clear. I have no book & i mean to get one, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best to replace filter and make sure it is clean.

I had the same problem with my C40TLRX. I replace the filter, but while motor was off I rigged up a shop vac with some plastic tubing and a catch jar and vacuumed out all of the crumbling filter. Added some fluid to the top of the area several times and vacuumed just to make sure I removed as much as possible
