• 1999 C50Y questions

I have this 50 HP mounted on a 16' Express bass boat, rated for 60HP. It had a brand new Ballistic 10 1/8 X 13 prop. on it when I bought the boat. I'm new to outboards, as I have been running jets for the last nine years. So please excuse my ignorance.

Background: When I got the boat the tach didn't work. After replacing the tach I noticed the WOT RPM was over the spec of between 4500-5500 RPMs. I could run 6100-6200 RPMs with a light load. For safety sake I had the prop cupped and that brought the RPM down to 5700-5800 RPMs and lost 2 to 3 MPH. But with the boat fully loaded, and I mean to the max, I can still run 5500-5600 RPM.

Now I have two questions:
1) What prop do you guys recommend, I have been told several different thing from several different manufacturers. My gut felling is I need something in the 15" pitch range as each inch of pitch is about 250 RPM. But from whom?

2) Being very handy with engines, am a master tech in another industry, how much trouble would it be to increase the HP to the 60 HP range? The 50 HP being lighter than a 60 HP is also a plus.Or would I be better served buying a 60 HP.
This engine has great compression and runs smooth as could ever be asked for. But being somewhat of a HP nut I just feel the need to run a motor that is equal to the hull rating. It has a great documented service history, so I feel very comfortable with it's reliability.

Sorry for the long post, but I fell the more information I provide the better answers I will recieve.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Great forum by the way. Glad I found it.

hkps1,
I can't help you on increasing the hp on your motor (I would guess different carb setup), but I can refer you to an expert for your prop (and, yes, I would go up to 15 inch pitch if you are running 13 now).
Go take a look on another forum - www.maverickboats.com and look up "Marcus" aka "Funky Monkey" and e-mail him. He is the rep for Power Tech props in Louisiana - great guy, and he really knows his stuff - will take time with you to come up with the ideal prop for your outboard.
Good luck ,
