1989 yamaha 90 gear shift

gear shift cable does not engage, how difficult is it to change?
please help.

but works when unhooked/shifts manually ?
just unhook @ motor and control, tie/tape new cable to old and pull thru

don't know yet, am rebuilding carb now, how do i manually put it in gear, should the motor be running when i manually shift?
