  • Diagnostic testing with Winky Blinky

    Have 2001 SX250TURZ.
I used the winky Blinky YB-06795 to diag a no spark\starting issue
I would appreciate confirmation I am using the tool correctly and that my reading is reliable.
From what I read in the manual I thought I would need to crank the engine to get a read out. But I get a continuous reading with the key turned to the on position..(1 blink short pause then 3 blinks) which I have interpreted as code 13= Incorrect Pulser Coil Input Signal
1- can I assume this reading is accurrate? it does give the same reading with the engine cranking but the Bulb is considerably dimmer. I was just surprised to see the read out
2- If this is a good read out I believe my next step is to test the Peak output from the pulser coil... I assume I need a harness for this? part #
I do have a proper voltmeter and a PVA...but without the harness I am uncertain how I would be able to test Properly.
The Manual states that the test will indicate either the need to replace the Pulser Coil if the reading is below spec or the CDI if above spec.
I also understand that the process may not be concluded as the winky blinky will diplay the lowest value until that is corrected and 13 is the first code on the list.
Any advise would be appreciated...and the thought of bringing in a proper mechanic is first on my own list...I just want to be knowledgeable enough to avoid replacing parts that do not require replacement.

You need to test entire ignition system to determine failed part, you can call boats.net at 877-408-1499 to special order the test harness needed.

Thank you for your reply. I called the 877-408-1499 to special order the test harness needed as you suggested.
The agent I spoke to could not help me...part in manual #YB-38832/90890-06772 is for the Pulser coil test he confirmed the part # as 06772 but could not order it or find a substitute. I may be able to get the test harness I need elsewhere but I would still like to confirm I am getting a true and dependable reading off the the diagnostic tool.
Is anyone familiar with the diagnostic tool aka "winky blinky" can at least confirm that I get a proper reading if the ignition is simply in the ON position...or if it must be cranking the flywheel. 2001 SX250TURZ..I know the tool works differently for different models...

again any assitance is appreciated...I would really like to get at least one last fishing run before I am forced to haul the boat...

I can not answer your question on the light, but I have slipped a small stiff wire into the back side of the connectors where the wire itself go into the connector. I used a stick pin that I dulled the point on so it would not go through the insulation as easy, just beside it. Just be careful not to damage the wire insulation, and hook your DVA up and take your readings

The part number for pulsor coil harness is YB-38832 and one for charge coils is YB-38831 for the OX66 models.
The light will show code by turning key on if there is a active code.

Thanks for the suggestion...I was considering doing something along those lines but hate the thought of causing damage with my less than delicate touch...I may need to go that route yet...but I wouldn't mind having the harness for future use as well...
