I have a 1971 V6 150. Has always run very well. Recently, will not shift into neutral or reverse. Just stays in forward regardless of where shift handle moves. What's the cause. What's involved in getting it fixed?

Need to check to see if the shift shaft is moving when you are moving the controls. Shaft may have rusted in two.
Maybe a 1991 not a 1971
