  • Replacing a 2 stroke motor with a 4 stroke

I have a 1989 Welcraft 250 sport fisherman. The boat is self is in great condition. I think it is time to replace the motor.
I have a 225 V6 excel outboard. I do a lot of off shore fishing. I am very good mechanically. Is this a difficult project? How hard is the conversion?

Depending if you go with a new fly by wire or used model with a cable setup. If you go with any f250, you will notice a drop in the stern. F250 adds some lbs. On the mechanical models the throtle and shift cable binnicle and key haerness will match up. You may need to make some choices on the tach and associated tach wire harness. They may be a different set up and always a work around ($'s). I chose to go with a new digital tach and wire harness. if you go all new "fly by wire," the whole rigging will need to be overhauled. My buddy had his redone from mechanical to electronic, with no issues. It even performs very nice-no hard gearing clunk, Good luck.
