Not picking up oil

I have a 1997 Yamaha 115 jet 2 stroke. The oil tank inside the engine is not picking up the oil automatically. I can refill the tank with the emergency switch and it runs until the tank runs out and then I have to stop and repeat the process. Does anyone know what is causing this to happen and what needs to be replaced? Thanks!
