Am looking at a 94 boat w/ a 94 Yamaha 225hp that was run without oil, and has a knock at low rpm. Compression excellent on all 6 cylinders, but seller is offering boat at very low price since engine could go anytime. Engine has about 280 hours on it. Spoke to mechanic who says it will need a new powerhead eventually or it may never need it, I sea trialed it and ran great.... Any comments as to what else could be done to determine extent of damage? Anything else I should look for?

The only way to find out is to tear engine down and check cylinders, pistons, rod and crankshaft for tolerances. -

With that knock in the motor, that engine is likely to self-destruct at any time. If it were me, I would go ahead and do a power-head rebuild before more damage occurs.
